Song of Love: The Story of Robert and Clara Schumann

Listen
Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 49 min
Event Type: Documentary Program Origin: KPFA

Claude Frank, a talented pianist and music professor, offers up this, at times hilarious, portrayal of the life and music of Robert and Clara Schumann. Apparently inspired by the MGM cinematic melodrama of the same name, which he had seen as a young 22 year old in 1947, Frank developed this humorous parody of the none too accurate biopic, and often performed it for his friends and family. Complete with funny impersonations of all the characters, sound effects, and of course his personal piano accompaniment of the music of Schumann, Liszt, and Brahms, this entertaining program has the audience in stitches for the full duration. While Frank has continued to perform his parody for small exclusive groups through the decades, the opportunity to hear this delightfully playful program is a rare treat and should not be missed.

Note: the last 10 minutes of the program are missing
