About Ear Magazine

Listen
Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 53 min
Event Type: Interview Program Origin: KPFA

Two related discussions of “Ear” magazine with host Charles Amirkhanian and Ear’s editor, Charles Shere , and publisher, Anne Kish. This program provides not only a behind the scenes look at “Ear” which had, at the time of this recording on January 23, 1973, just published it’s first edition, but also at the making of a radio review, as the first segment features the three discussing both “Ear” magazine and the way in which KPFA would review it, while the second segment features a more polished or edited review that was ready for broadcast. “Ear” was founded in Berkeley CA, in 1973 by Shere, Kish, with the assistance of an all volunteer staff. Intended as a means to galvanize a sense of community among Bay Area classical musicians, the magazine featured concert listings and articles highlighting not only major performances of traditional classical music, but also more contemporary and avant-garde events that were largely overlooked by the mainstream press. One feature that garnered a lot of interest, and which is discussed in detail in both parts of this program, were the magazine’s “rectified reviews” in which musicians and composers would take issue with music reviews published in the major Bay Area newspapers. “Ear” published 25 issues between 1973 and 1975, at which time its then current chief editor, Beth Anderson, moved the publication to New York, while a West Coast edition continued to be published in California. The California version remained a going concern until the early 1980s, while the then better known New York version underwent a number of ownership and editorial changes but continued to be published up until 1991.
