The Music of Bernard van Beurden

Listen
Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 110 min
Event Type: Interview and Music Program Origin: KPFA

Han Reiziger interviews the Dutch composer, Bernard van Beurden, and plays a number of his works. Beurden, who was born in 1933, and is not very well known in the United States, composes avant-garde music, often preferring to work with youth or amateur groups, rather than with professional orchestras. The result is often a less polished yet more vibrant performance, as is demonstrated on a number of the works played here. One can not help but feel that what Beurden has sacrificed in terms of quality is more than made up for in terms of having fun. Many of his works are for choruses and he has found that there are many small or amateur choirs willing to work with him. Although as you will hear, on at least one occasion the groups are overwhelmed by the avant-garde nature of his compositions, and are surprised when they discover that a composer of such music would also be willing to include more traditional works into the concerts he produces. But for Beurden the emphasis is on enjoying music and not on promoting one type of compositional style over another.
