1965 ONCE Festival: Concert Two

Listen
Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 65 min
Event Type: Music Program Origin: KPFA

The 1965 ONCE Festival was held in Ann Arbor, Michigan from Feb. 11-14. This was the fifth in a series of festivals put on during the early and mid-1960s which were devoted to new and avant-garde music. The founders of the ONCE Festivals and its associated ONCE Group included Robert Ashley, Gordon Mumma, George Cacioppo, Roger Reynolds, and Donald Scavarda. This, the second concert, held on February 12, 1965, includes works by Russell Peck, Robert Ashley, George Crevoshay, George Cacioppo and Blue Gene Tyranny. The composition’s were probably all composed between 1964 and 1965 and for most this was their first performance. They all involve pre-recorded tape, and electronic or amplified instruments, and clearly represent the type of experimental music then being explored by many young composers,. However, the fact that many of these men later went on to enjoy successful careers is perhaps foreshadowed by the fact that none of these early works are quite as dissonant as those of their lesser known contemporaries. The influence of the ONCE Festival and its associated chamber ensemble was to prove to be considerable in the following decades and this early recording gives ample reason for why that was so.
