Press Conference of Harold Farberman, Feb. 1970

Listen
Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 24 min
Event Type: Interview Program Origin: KPFA

On February 26, 1970, Harold Farberman was presented to the San Francisco Bay Area media as the new Musical Director of the Oakland Symphony Orchestra during this press conference. Farberman was to succeed Gerhard Samuel, who had made quite a reputation at Oakland as an adventurous concert programmer, and had resigned from his post because he wanted to pursue more guest conducting jobs. As a result of this history, Farberman and Herbert Sandler, the vice president of the Symphony, emphasize the Maestro’s commitment to contemporary classical composers, pointing out that Farberman has been a great promoter of Charles Ives’ music, as well as assuring everybody that he would be permitted to pursue any guest conducting offers that arose during his tenure. Quizzing the conductor on these and other points are a number of music critics from the Bay Area, including Charles Amirkhanian of KPFA, Charles Shere of KQED, Paul Hertelendy & Alexander Fried with the Oakland Tribune, and Robert Commanday of the San Francisco Chronicle. Lincoln Lee, the principal oboist of the Oakland Symphony and a member of the search committee also express his support for the new Director. Farberman was to remain with the Oakland Symphony from 1971 to 1979.
