Duration: 134 min |
| Event Type: Interview and Music |
Program Origin: KPFA |
On April 6, 1971, in honor of Andrew Imbrie's 50th birthday, Charles Amirkhanian interviews the Berkeley based composer and plays a selection of his music, including his “Violin Concerto” of 1954 and his “String Quartet No. 4” from 1969. Imbrie studied briefly with Nadio Boulanger in Paris in 1937, and was also a student of Roger Sessions. He taught at the University of California in Berkeley from 1949 until his retirement in 1991, and died in 2007. Joining Amirkhanian and Imbrie for a lively discussion about Imbrie’s music, early influences, and the differences between neoclassicism and romanticism, was the San Francisco Chronicle’s music critic, Robert Commanday. |
