George Cleve presents a tribute to the Russian-American giant, Igor Stravinsky, broadcast on April 7, 1971, one day after his death. This reluctant farewell to one of classical music’s most innovative composers and conductors features a rendition of his entire "Firebird" ballet, played on piano by Stravinsky himself and captured on a player piano roll. Also on the program is the “Duo Concertant” for violin and piano, also with Stravinsky on piano, as well as the orchestral works, “Four Norwegian Moods”, and “Le Sacre du Printemps” or “Rite of Spring”. A fitting retrospective of the magnificent career of one of the pioneers of contemporary classical music. |
