Opera Review:
San Francisco Opera’s Siegfried & Tosca

Listen
Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 63 min
Event Type: Interview Program Origin: KPFA

Bill Collins with Michael and Carol Barclay, reviews the 1972 San Francisco Opera production of “Siegfried,” after having raced across the Bay Bridge after catching the October 22nd performance. Later Carol is joined in the KPFA studios by Arthur Regan and Melvin Jahn to discuss the Opera’s 1972 production of Giacomo Puccini‘s “Tosca.” The erudition and near encyclopedic knowledge of the group are on full display as they rate the various performers, conductors, and staging of each performance, including illuminating reviews of the singing of Thomas Stewart, Berit Lindholm, Hana Janků, and Plácido Domingo, among others. Although not overwhelmed by either production, the reviewers do consider many of the innovations of these efforts in a favorable light, although the audience does comes in for some scolding for occasional giggling and a general lack of respect for the conductor on at least one occasion. For anyone who is interested in, but perhaps a little intimidated by, classical opera, this program allows one to begin to think about how to think about the art form.
