Charles Amirkhanian talks with the then recently appointed conductor of the San Francisco Symphony, Edo de Waart. Born in Holland in 1941, de Waart came to the Bay Area after serving as principle conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. In this interview he discusses his approach to his new position in San Francisco, the impact of audio recordings on his field, his impressions of American vs. European radio, his attitude towards new music, and the new symphony hall that was to be built in San Francisco by the end of 1981. (Now known as Davies Hall). This interview was recorded at de Waart’s apartment in San Francisco on January 23, 1978.
