The Waltz Project |
|
| Item Type: Sound Recording |
Duration: 35 min |
| Event Type: Interview and Music |
Program Origin: KPFA |
Charles Amirkhanian is joined in the KPFA studio by John Cobb and Robert Moran to talk about their edition of waltzes by contemporary composers, published by C. F. Peters. Lou Harrison, Milton Babbitt, Joseph Fennimore, Philip Glass, and others were asked to write a waltz for this project and the resulting works vary from the sublime to the strong, with each composer’s personality shining through the constraints of the format. In this program, recorded on March 29, 1979, John Cobb performs a number of these collected waltzes, live on KPFA’s aging Steinway piano. Seventeen of the waltzes in the collection have since been released on Nonesuch Records (D-79011), featuring performances by Cobb, Moran, Alan Feinberg, and Yvar Mikhashoff. |
