An Early Electronic Work by Heikki Laitinen

Listen
Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 26 min
Event Type: Music Program Origin: KPFA

Charles Amirkhanian introduces an experimental electronic work by the Finnish composer Heikki Laitinen. Roughly translated as “Dead Air,” the work incorporates 10 traditional folk songs or yoiks (or juoiggus) by Antti Porksi of Lapland into an evocative electronic soundscape. Yoiks were often an integral part of Sami shamanism, where they were used in rituals in which the shaman would journey to the underworld in search of cures for disease or spiritual guidance. This particular tape piece was composed in 1971 at the Experimental Studio of the Finnish Broadcast Company.
