Mimi Johnson on Lovely Music

Listen
Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 12 min
Event Type: Interview Program Origin: KPFA

Recorded backstage at the Walker Art Center on June 12, 1980, Charles Amirkhanian interviews Mimi Johnson, founder of Lovely Music, a record label dedicated to New Music. Johnson’s company has released albums by a number of avant-garde composers, including many from the San Francisco Bay Area, such as Blue Gene Tyranny, Robert Ashley, and Maggi Payne. While Johnson admits that it is easy for composers to issue their own albums, she claims that many artists prefer to have a little distance between their creative process and the business of selling their music, and that distance, as well as a degree of professional production, is what her company offers. In addition to describing her plans to become profitable within 10 years, Johnson and Amirkhanian also discuss the packaging of Lovely Records and their preference of LPs over the smaller and less attractive tape cassettes.
