The Music of Orlando García

Listen
Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 50 min
Event Type: Music Program Origin: KPFA

Orlando Jacinto García, is a Cuban-born, American composer of new music, and is Professor of Music and Director of the Composition Program for the School of Music at Florida International University. He studied with Morton Feldman, has composed more than 100 works in many different genres, worked with numerous ensembles, and has founded and directed a number of international festivals, including the New Music Miami Festival and the Music of the Americas Festival. However back in the spring of 1984 he was just finishing his graduate studies at the University of Miami when he gave Charles Amirkhanian a recording of a concert featuring four of his early works. Works that García later disowned after beginning his studies with Feldman! Why that happened is a mystery as these works for piano, cello, and chamber orchestra are wonderful examples of contemporary classical music, while the first piece, “Candlestick Park” for cello and tape is a charming testimony to a life time of devotion to the San Francisco Giants.
