San Francisco Opera Special, 1989

A 1989 review of the San Francisco Opera season in the national publication, “Musical America” raised the roof on a storm of controversy: Is the Opera so beholden to superstar soloists that the Pavarottis of the world are no longer tenors but conductors, directors, and personnel managers as well? Is the S.F. Opera at the mercy of the box office to the degree that it has lost its hard-won integrity built up over the years of the leadership of Kurt Herbert Adler? Paul Moor, author of this critique, is the featured guest of Charles Amirkhanian in this program exploring the state of opera in San Francisco. At the time of this recording Mr. Moor had settled in San Francisco after spending the years between 1949 to 1981 living in Europe, including stays in Paris, Munich, and West Berlin.
