The Pittsburgh International Contemporary Music Festival, held on November 24-30, 1952, featured ten concerts of contemporary classical music, including this concert of organ music by Arthur Honegger, Olivier Messiaen, and Roger Sessions. Sponsored by the Carnegie Institute and the Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham University), the Festival has come to be recognized as a watershed event in 20th century musical composition. This particular concert featured Marshall Bidwell performing Honegger’s “Fugue and Chorale”, John Lively’s rendition of three selections from Olivier Messiaen‘s “La Nativite Du Seigneur”, and Valentina Woshner Fillinger playing “Three Chorale Preludes” by Roger Sessions.
