Krenek plays Krenek: Four Piano Works Performed by the Composer (1963)

Listen
Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 62 min
Event Type: Music Program Origin: KPFA

This is a 1963 program featuring four piano works by Ernst Krenek introduced and performed by the composer himself. This first work, “Piano Sonata No. 3,” is a 12 tone work in four movements. Krenek describes in some detail the series of tones used in the composition and how the work is constructed. “Sechs Vermessene,” as Krenek explains, is a series of measurements of a 12 tone series, thus the title, which roughly translates as “Six Measurements.” “ Basler Massarbeit” was originally composed for two amateur pianist friends of Krenek and its title also serves as a pun as it can mean both something “custom made,” or more strictly, “a measured work,” both of which aptly describe the piece. Technically it is not too difficult to perform yet it still remains intellectually interesting due to its intricate combination of rhythms. It too is based on a twelve tone series in which the two halves of the series are almost mirror images of each other. The last work, “Echoes From Austria,” is a collection of seven pieces, six of which iare based on Austrian folk songs, with the remaining one being an original composition by Krenek himself. The composer playfully suggests that listeners try to discern which of the seven pieces is wholly his own.
