Exhibition Music by Douglas Leedy

Listen
Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 59 min
Event Type: Music Program Origin: KPFA

Douglas Leedy is a composer, born in 1938, who spent several years in the Bay Area at the University of California in Berkeley. He wrote his “Exhibition Music” as background music for a party given in June of 1965. The occasion was a reception for delegates to the United Nations, held at the home of Drs. John H. and Lucile W. Green in El Cerrito, CA. It was the composer's intention to provide music of the sort needed to fill the sudden awkward silences which occasionally obtrude in such a social event. For this performance various instrumentalists were posted in various rooms of the Green residence, and on the adjunct grounds. This recording was made by Judy Winkler, who moved around among the guests with a portable tape recorder. The performance included two violins, viola, cello, string bass, clarinet, alto saxophone, bassoon, two French horns and Wagner tuba.
