| Item Type: Sound Recording |

Program Origin: Shere/KPFA |
Recorded on December 1, 1966 at the San Francisco College for Women (later known as Lone Mountain College), this is a piano recital of contemporary and avant-garde classical music performed by David Hemmingway. Featured works include Anton Webern’s “Variations, Op. 27,” a spirited version of Pierre Boulez’s first “Piano Sonata,” and a more subdued and sublime selection from Claude Debusssy’s ”Préludes, Book II,” entitled “Bruyères.” The concert concludes with the well known “Scherezo in A Flat Major” by Aleksandr Borodin. During the mid-1960s Mr. Hemmingway developed a loyal audience with his masterful performances of contemporary music which combined excellent musicianship with exquisite technique. David Hemmingway graduated from Haverford College in Pennsylvania and did post-graduate work at U. C. Berkeley. He studied with Madame Messina of the Curtis Institute and Alexander Uninsky of the University of Toronto. Hemmingway also studied composition with Henry Cowell of Columbia University. In 1964 he received the Eisner Performance Prize at U. C. Berkeley, and with this concert recording you will hear why. |
