In the late 1970s and early 1980s the Experimental Intermedia Foundation held a series of exciting concerts of avant-garde and electro-acoustic music at Phil Niblock’s loft in the SoHo district of New York City. These concerts were then packaged into a series of hour-long radio programs entitled “Concerts by Composers” and distributed to interested radio stations around the United States. This third program in the series features music by Jim Fulkerson, Peter Zummo, & Yoshi Wada. The program begins with “Music for Brass Instruments II” by Jim Fulkerson in which he plays the bass trombone accompanied by two prerecorded bass trombones. This is followed by three excerpts from a concert given by Peter Zummo on June 1, 1979 at the Experimental Intermedia Foundation. The name of the concert long work was “Report from Jerusalem” and entailed Zummo playing the trombone accompanied by prerecorded music and ambient sounds with slides showing in the background. This program concludes with Yoshi Wada’s “Lament for the Rise and Fall of the Elephantine Crocodile.” Wada is a sound installation artist, member of Fluxus, and student of Pandit Pran Nath. In this recording from a concert held in April 1979, he plays a homemade bagpipe in a drone piece that is somewhat reminiscent of his contemporary La Monte Young. The production and distribution of this program was originally funded by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, & the Beards Fund. |
