No. 07: Works by Franz Kamin, George Lewis, & Jackson MacLow

In the late 1970s and early 1980s the Experimental Intermedia Foundation held a series of exciting concerts of avant-garde and electro-acoustic music at Phill Niblock’s loft in the SoHo district of New York City. These concerts were then packaged into a series of hour-long radio programs entitled “Concerts by Composers” and distributed to interested radio stations around the United States. This seventh program in the series features music by Jackson Mac Low, Franz Kamin, & George Lewis. The program begins with two works by poet and composer Jackson Mac Low. Each piece uses as its text a selection of words that were determined by chance operations. Following this is “Rugugmool” by Franz Kamin (sp?), which is scored for a narrator, three sopranos and two bass singers, keyboards, flute and piccolo, clarinet, and bassoon. The program concludes with excerpts of two works for trombone and synthesizer by George Lewis. All performances are taken from concerts given at the Experimental Intermedia Foundation in 1979 and 1980. The program host is Bérénice Reynaud, with each featured composer also providing additional commentary on their compositions. The production and distribution of this program was originally funded by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, & the Beards Fund.
