Charles Hamm, a noted historian and musicologist specializing in American music both serious and popular, visited KPFA in October 1980. During the ensuing interview Hamm discussed developments in South African and American popular music with Charles Amirkhanian and Chris Strachwitz, illustrating his comments with many recorded examples. Hamm, who has been involved with the study of Zulu popular music in particular reported on what he discovered during a trip to Africa. In addition Hamm traces the manner in which musical genres seem to cross-pollinate and possibly converge, and how the advent of musical recording technology has spurred this trend. Hamm, was at the time of this recording, a member of the faculty of the Music Department at Dartmouth College. He is the author of several books including the widely acclaimed, “Yesterdays: Popular Songs in America” and “Music in the New World”. The width and depth of Hamm’s understanding of all types of music make this program a delight for any fan of popular and world music. |
