Morning Concert: Benjamin Lees |
|
Item Type: Sound Recording |
Duration: 28 min |
Event Type: Music and Interview |
Program Origin: KPFA |
Charles Amirkhanian talks to composer Benjamin Lees about his life and work, including his memories of living in Paris, playing chess with Marcel Duchamp, and meeting other famous artists of the Surrealist era. Mr. Lees was the most prominent pupil of George Antheil, and one can perhaps hear the influence of this maverick American composer in some of Lees works. Included in this program is the premier performance of Lees’ “Concerto for Brass Choir and Orchestra”, performed by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Eduardo Mata. Mr. Lees passed away in May of 2010 at the grand age of 86. |
