MOCA/FM:
Sound Art from the Museum of Conceptual Art

Listen
Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 35 min
Event Type: Spoken Word Program Origin: KPFA

The Museum of Conceptual Art (MOCA), San Francisco, presents an exhibition for radio by 26 artists, each of whom had been asked to do produce pieces of about sixty seconds duration. Produced by Tom Marioni, director of MOCA, these brief conceptual sound pieces, created by a variety of artists, sculptors, and musicians range from rather conventional jazz music and poetry to downright bizarre examples of text sound compositions and quasi ambient sound recordings. As with all the programs produced by MOCA and which can be heard on www.radiOM.org, the barrier between art and life is defined, explored, and often punctured, and should be enjoyed with one’s tongue firmly planted in one’s cheek.

Musical Selections:  [recitation of the names of various art movements] -- [mix of foreign voices] / Warner Jepson -- [sound poetry piece with 1920ish pop song] / Anthony Gnazzo -- [advertising copy for “chicken starter special”] / Paul Marioni -- [plea to turn off radio and concentrate] / Jim Melchert -- [jazz music] / Allan Fish -- [report on various diseases] / Joel Glassman -- [rant about why he won’t do a piece] / Patrick Gleeson -- [emergency broadcast system test] / Paul Kos -- [thoughts about love and hate] / William Wiley -- [poem with word kill] / Howard Fried -- [dogs and people howling] / Peter Strinberg -- [babies and young children making sounds] / Peter Veres -- [a joke with people laughing] / Terry Fox -- [recording of the time from the telephone with poetry] / John Woodall -- [applause] / Charles Amirkhanian -- [sounds of rubbing?] / Mike & Allison Cohn -- [counting] / Jerry Bowen -- [sound of waves] / Wally Hedrick -- [sound of breathing] / Bill Mott Smith -- [Jew’s harp loop] / Stephen Laub -- [sneezing] / Carol Law -- [announcement for an upcoming sound art exhibition] / Mel Henderson -- [group discussion about an art piece] / Robert Ashley -- [piano music] / Charles Shere -- [distorted recording of person talking] / Richard Friedman
