A recording of works by Robert Erickson given at the 4th Annual New Sounds San Jose Concert in 1982. Born in 1917, Erickson studied with Ernst Krenek, and was one of the first American composers to work with tape music. He served as a mentor for such composers as Morton Subotnick, Pauline Oliveros, and Terry Riley while holding a variety of teaching positions at U. C. Berkeley, U. C. San Diego, the San Francisco Conservatory, and other institutions. Erickson died in 1997 after a long illness. In this program the works heard include “Night Music”, for trumpet and instrumental ensemble, a cantata based on a text by Wallace Stevens, “Summer Music” for violin and tape, and others. This program was recorded on May 7, 1982. |
