Two Works by Paul Kalbach

Listen
Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 49 min
Event Type: Music Program Origin: KPFA

Two electro-acoustic works by Paul Kalbach, a San Francisco Bay Area composer, painter, and visual artist. Kalbach, who received his B. A., M. A., and M. F. A. degrees from the University of California at Berkeley, became interested in composting electronic music when he was introduced to the Buchla Synthesizer by Suzanne Ciani. He was quickly enamored with this new medium of artistic expression and soon built his own music studio, starting with dozens of old language lab reel to reel tape decks and assorted bits of electronic gear purchased from Don Buchla during a garage sale. From these humble beginnings Kalbach taught himself how to build electronic components and began to compose a series of works that combined processed guitar and keyboards with feedback and various forms of electronic sounds. The two works featured here are early examples of the type of do-it-yourself electronic music produced by this multi-talented artist, who also has created a series of stunning paintings, drawings, and lithographs, including one that shares its title with the first musical selection, and which can be seen at http://www.paulkalbach.com/PAUL%20KALBACH%20Painting/large-61.html
