| Item Type: Sound Recording |
Duration: 29 min |
| Event Type: Music |
Program Origin: KPFA |
A recording of a brass trio by Douglas Leedy, and three works for solo piano by Bruce Mather, David Chaitkin, and William Bolcom. These works, most all of which were composed in the early 1960s, were possibly recorded at a concert given around 1967. The exact identification of each piece is tentative, and perhaps represents various arrangements or otherwise obscure and/or early compositions by these mostly lesser known, but by no means, lesser talented composers. The first, and most substantial piece, is a 1962 Trio, for trumpet, horn, and trombone by Leedy, and it is representative of the sort of new music then being created by American composers in the mid-20th century. This is followed by similarly avant-garde piano compositions, Bruce Mather’s “Mystras,” “Three Studies” by Chaitkin, and “Five Night Pieces” by William Bolcom. The performers include an assortment of well respected San Francisco Bay Area musicians. |
