Pacifica Chamber Players:
An Avant-Garde Concert, (January 19, 1971)

Listen
Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 103 min
Event Type: Music Program Origin: KPFA

The Pacifica Chamber Players, formed for the purpose of playing studio concerts over the air on KPFA, present a concert of music composed for the ensemble by Charles Amirkhanian, Richard Friedman, Charles Shere, Julian White, plus a work written by the American composer Henry Brant. The Players include different performers for each concert, depending on the music chosen by the ensemble's director, clarinetist, Thomas Rose.

The first piece, "Knell", by Amirkhanian features the tape manipulation of a previously recorded live concert and uses numerous unusual sound-making devices. Brant's "Variation for Four Instruments" was written when Brant was only 17 years old. This early work exhibits what Brant has termed "oblique harmony," a procedure by which the various resolutions of the separate voices sound at different times, (in the form of a slant when viewed on the score), rather than simultaneously. The result is a sort of perpetual dissonance. The composer leaves the instrumentation of the work up to the performers with the one admonition to chose "four instruments of tone-qualites sufficiently unlike so as to result in a clear presentation of the polyphony". Also heard are two quartets (for winds and strings) written by Charles Shere and here played simultaneously; a work by Julian White for piano, string trio and bassoon; additional compositions by Brant and Shere performed by Julian White; and the world premiere of "El Ojo de Gringa" by Richard Friedman.
