Radio Event:
No. 4: DD

Listen
Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 60 min
Event Type: Inter-Media / Visual Arts Program Origin: KPFA

Stanley Lunetta, editor of the avant-garde music periodical “Source,” invited the listening audience to participate at home as part of KPFA’s groundbreaking, interactive, participatory, Radio Event series. Using a graphic score and list of instructions published in the December 1969 KPFA Folio, or program guide, audience members were encouraged to listen to various programs on KPFA while altering the settings on their radios. The listeners were requested to record the sonic results and to then bring the tapes to the station for eventual broadcast during this Radio Event program. Suggested activities included, turning the radio on and off, moving from AM to FM, adjusting the treble and bass controls, changing stations, etc... It seems that most listeners chose to record KPFA programs featuring electronic music, perhaps inspired by Lunetta’s own regular KPFA program, also called “Source,” with the result being a collage of mostly electronic sounds and music with occasional snippets of voices, such as John Cage giving a lecture or reading. This version of the program is the air check recording, made during the actual broadcast on December 20, 1969.
