| Item Type: Sound Recording |
Duration: 41 min |
| Event Type: Music |
Program Origin: KPFA |
Recorded on May 17, 1971 at the Fireman’s Fund Theater in San Francisco, this is the last half of a concert of music by American composers, sponsored by the San Francisco Chamber Music Society. Starting after the intermission, this portion of the concert featured Ruth Crawford Seeger’s “String Quartet.” This was followed by a selection of hymns originally published in the famous “Southern Harmony, and Musical Companion,” a shape note hymn and tune book compiled by William Walker in the mid 19th century. The concert then concludes with a selection of choral music composed by William Billings in the late 1700s. The performing choir is the Cal State, Hayward Chamber Singers, under the direction of Harry Carter. |
