Larry Jackson introduces a concert featuring works by six contemporary West Coast composers, performed by the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, under the direction of Jean-Louis LeRoux, at the Fireman’s Fund Auditorium in San Francisco on March 22, 1976. The pieces heard are the trio “Timepiece” by Lawrence Moss, two songs by Loren Rush and Robert Basart, a quintet called “Capriccios” by Karl Kohn, and two world premieres, “Dualities” for solo harp by David Sheinfeld, and the Pulitzer Prize nominated “Linea Meridiana,” for soprano and instrumental ensemble, by Charles Boone. The San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, originally formed in 1971 and still continuing to give concerts today, features the talents of a host of local Bay Area musicians of note, and is directed by Jean-Louis LeRoux and Marcella DeCray. The works in this concert are distinctly contemporary without being overly dissonant, and taken in total, provide a picture of the unique direction that many West Coast composers were taking in the later half of the 20th century. |
