Speaking of Music:
Bob Snyder, 1985

Listen
Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 124 min
Event Type: Interview and Music Program Origin: KPFA

Charles Amirkhanian interviews electronic music composer and avant-garde video artist, Bob Snyder, on March 14, 1985, as part of the Speaking of Music series. Snyder is a member of the Faculty at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and has been working with sound and video synthesis since the 1960s. He has made a number of video pieces that incorporate electronic music and heavily processed video imagery, three of which were shown and are heard during this program. Snyder discusses in detail many of the technical challenges he has had to overcome in order to produce his art as well as the historical origins of video art in general. Also heard in this program is an excerpt from a purely musical work-in-progress, “Sagging Context Orchestra” which was inspired by many of the most unusual jazz solos of the early 20th Century, samples of which are also played. You might not be able to see everything discussed here, but the audio alone makes for a wonderful program of avant-garde electronic music.
