Program No. 14: Ted Berrigan and Ron Padgett

Listen
Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 50 min
Event Type: Spoken Word Program Origin: KPFA

One in a series of programs produced by Clark Coolidge that feature the works of late 20th century poets, sound poets, and authors. In this recording you will hear two poetry readings. The first, by Ted Berrigan, given in Iowa City on Oct. 13, 1968, and the other by Berrigan and Ron Padgett, given in New York City in 1964. Both members of the New York School of young poets active during the 1960s and beyond, Berrigan and Padgett write short and often humorous poems. In these works, many of which were written in collaboration with other poets, either living or dead, Berrigan and Padgett offer ruminations on the battle over alternating current, dirty limericks, thoughts about war, drugs and sex, and a host of other poetical insights. Their irreverent re-workings of some of the great poems of the past, such as Robert Frost’s “The Birches” and Ezra Pound’s “The Pact” are reminiscent of John Cage’s radical experiments with established musical forms. While they might make John Milton turn in his grave, these poems serve as an excellent example of the avant-garde poetry of the late 20th Century.

Note: Contains some profanity. Names of poems taken from the authors introductions and may not exactly match those found in published books.
