Other Minds Festival: OM 14: Concert 3 View Item Type: Video Duration: 128 mins Event Type: Music Program Origin: Other Minds Additional Media Files (click to view) The third and final concert of OM 14 was held on March 7, 2009. After brief introductions and announcements, the concert begins with: Spiral Xi: Mother and Child Each of Chinary Ung's “Spiral” pieces focuses on a single idea that is re-imagined and re-contextualized over the course of the work. This work investigates the notion of musicality as something beyond instrumental practice. Rather, the use of vocal sounds (singing, humming, chanting, and whistling) is equally as important as are the variety of string techniques that form the rich vocabulary of Ung’s string writing. The balance between voice and viola shifts throughout the work, and the combination of these two dimensions produces a world that is more than the sum of its parts. - Adam Greene Listening to Lu Tzu-Hsün Play the Ch’in on a Moonlit Night It turns out that Harry Partch’s Adapte...

Among the 1.7 million killed were half of his family members. The players intone nonsensical phonemes and sing in raw village style, very explicitly scored. Ung is not interested in trained classical voices and urges his players not to try to imitate them. In addition, various members are asked to sing and whistle, often while playing completely different material at the same time. “Spiral X” was co-commissioned by the Del Sol Performing Arts Organization and the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation. -Charles...

Elena Kats-Chernin describes her works for piano, which despite their deceptively simple structure, are in fact incredibly difficult to play. And a somewhat taciturn Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith offers a brief introduction to his compositional technique, while also declaring his personal predilection to not talk about h...

Other Minds Executive & Artistic Director Charles Amirkhanian explained the 20th anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on two decades’ worth of prescient programming. "As we look back at the nearly 200 composers we've brought to San Francisco for these gatherings, it seemed a good time to tip our hat to some of our most surprising discoveries who have gone on to make signal contributions to international concert life. We'll also pay tribute to the late Peter Sculthorpe, who had accepted an invitation to be with us as our elder statesman, and the legendary Lou Harrison, whose last work was composed for our 2002 festival and our American steel guitar soloist David Tanenbaum, and will be reprised on our opening night." Othe...
