Other Minds Festival: OM 17: Panel Discussion & Concert 3 Listen Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 134 min Event Type: Lecture / Panel Discussion Program Origin: Other Minds Additional Media Files (click to view) The third and final concert of the 17th Other Minds Festival of New Music (OM 17) began with a panel discussion with some of the composers and performers featured in the night’s concert, held on March 3 2012. Joining moderator Charles Amirkhanian were composers Tyshawn Sorey, Lotta Wennäkoski, John Kennedy and Ken Ueno, as well as video artist Johnny Dekam. Tyshawn Sorey talks about his very early interest in becoming a musician and how his style of playing has been influenced by his exposure, through his parents large record collection, to a wide variety of musical genres and world music traditions. These amazing electro-acoustic pieces were followed by two works by the oft overlooked composer of new music, Joseph Byrd. Composed in the early 1960s, “Water Music” and “Animals” explore the potential of percussion music, be it with traditional i...

Other Minds Festival: OM 20: Panel Discussion & Concert 1 Listen Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 141 min Event Type: Lecture / Panel Discussion Program Origin: Other Minds Additional Media Files (click to view) 2015 marked the 20th anniversary of the Other Minds Festival of New Music. Other Minds Executive & Artistic Director Charles Amirkhanian explained the 20th anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on two decades worth of prescient programming. “As we look back at the nearly 200 composers we’ve brought to San Francisco for these gatherings, it seemed a good time to tip our hat to some of our most surprising discoveries who have gone on to make signal contributions to international concert life. We’ll also pay tribute to the late Peter Sculthorpe, who had accepted an invitation to be with us as our elder statesman, and the legendary Lou Harrison, whose last work was composed for our 2002 festival and our American steel guitar soloist David Tanenbaum, and will be reprised on our opening night.” Other...
