In typical OM fashion the concert was a mix of both the old and the young, the established and the new. The evening featured two spatially immersive tape pieces by the young English composer Natasha Barrett, who incorporates ambient sounds, fragments of text, and carefully placed electronic sounds in her engaging acoustamitic compositions. Also heard this evening were two extended works for jazz trio composed by the legendary saxophonist Kidd Joradan and performed with the assistance of Warren Smith and William Parker. Completeing the program were two experimental classical compositions by Paweł Mykietyn, a Polish composer whose breathtaking works, with the assistance of Other Minds, are just beginning to reach the ears of an apprecia...

Among the 1.7 million killed were half of his family members. The players intone nonsensical phonemes and sing in raw village style, very explicitly scored. Ung is not interested in trained classical voices and urges his players not to try to imitate them. In addition, various members are asked to sing and whistle, often while playing completely different material at the same time. “Spiral X” was co-commissioned by the Del Sol Performing Arts Organization and the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation. -Charles...

Streichquartett II This serene string quartet is a slow and subtle sequence of chords that create a series of semitones that seem to pulsate in a pattern of harmonic changes. Composer Jürg Frey introduces the piece in the program notes thusly: “When I was working on the ‘String Quartet’ (1988), I encountered the painting of Agnes Martin, I saw clear-cut forms, not ...

Other Minds Executive & Artistic Director Charles Amirkhanian explained the 20th anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on two decades worth of prescient programming. “As we look back at the nearly 200 composers we’ve brought to San Francisco for these gatherings, it seemed a good time to tip our hat to some of our most surprising discoveries who have gone on to make signal contributions to international concert life. We’ll also pay tribute to the late Peter Sculthorpe, who had accepted an invitation to be with us as our elder statesman, and the legendary Lou Harrison, whose last work was composed for our 2002 festival and our American steel guitar soloist David Tanenbaum, and will be reprised on our opening night.” Other...
