31. radiOM.org - New music, composers, poetry, video and audio streaming [4.659% Popularity: 0.00000]
Radical Aesthetics and Sound Sensitivity Information Charles Amirkhanian, KPFA's Sound Sensitivity Information Director, has been invited to join the staff of radio station VPRO in Holland from September to January. Although VPRO is a government supported station, it is enthusiastic about the Pacifica stations and we have both felt the benefit of these exchanges. Most recently, KPFA was host to Philippe Scheltema who did the midday program Here's Philippe this past winter. It helps keep our flow of information and input of ideas fresh and flexible, covering broad areas of radio, politics, and of course radical aesthetics… In Europe, radio is still alive and kicking—a force for intelligent, in-depth analysis and debate, music and literature broadcasts of a sophisticated nature, and productions in all areas of programming which are carefully thought out and skillfully accomplished by audio technicians who are experts in making a point without the aid of a video screen. But in the United States, virtually every ...
32. radiOM.org - Inti-Illimani: Live in Concert at Stanford University, (October 30, 1974) [3.223% Popularity: 0.00000]
Inti-Illimani: Live in Concert at Stanford University, (October 30, 1974) Listen Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 142 min Event Type: Interview and Music Program Origin: KPFA At Stanford University on October 30, 1973, Inti-Illimani, a Chilean folk music group, performed in concert, just months after the military coup in Chile had led to the their exile as well as the death of their fellow folk singer and frequent collaborator, Victor Jara. Saved from a similar fate by the fact that they were on tour in Europe at the time of Pinochet’s violent take over, the group took this opportunity to offer a poignant tribute to Jara and other victims of the fascist regime. They also played the music that had made them the most popular group in Chile during the Allende years, music that celebrated the popular culture of the Latin American countries particularly those in the Andean region of the continent. They spoke of the beauty of the music of the indigenous people of that area, and told why that music and art was n...
33. radiOM.org - Charles Amirkhanian Interviewed on Radio Adelaide (Dec. 1, 2011) [0.947% Popularity: 0.00000]
Charles Amirkhanian Interviewed on Radio Adelaide (Dec. 1, 2011) Listen Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 170 min Event Type: Interview and Music Program Origin: Radio Adelaide Additional Media Files (click to view) Charles Amirkhanian visited with host Grahame Dudley of Radio Adelaide, Australia, on December 1, 2011 (9am-12pm). "Imagine that you were asked to create a 60-second 'commercial' in the form of a work of new music which was to be aired on a European rock station. Furthermore, that the sound of the piece was, in some way, to exemplify the cultural connection between France and the U.S. Via immigration, migration, domination, and through war and peace, the populations of these two nations have, by the late 20th century, taken on striking multi-cultural profiles, which in the allotted time can be only hinted at here. My solution was to collage snippets of various ethnic musics, both from the former French colonies and from Cajun and Native American music." Dudley plays a selection of music by Amir...
34. radiOM.org - Other Minds Festival OM 9, Concert 3: 02 “Sarajevo” & “Three Sentimental Songs” by Jack Body [0.198% Popularity: 0.00000]
Other Minds Festival: OM 9, Concert 3: 02 “Sarajevo” & “Three Sentimental Songs” by Jack Body Listen Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 24 min Event Type: Music Program Origin: Other Minds “Sarajevo” was written at the invitation of the New Zealand pianist Michael Houstoun, who premiered it at the 1996 International Festival of Arts in Wellington. “Sarajevo” is a reflection on the horrors and futility of the Bosnian war and was partly inspired by my seeing Emir Kausturica's film “Underground”. The film exposes the war's cruel manipulation of ethnic, religious and nationalistic sentiments. The first movement, called "Remembering...imperfectly," is based on the idea of "selective memory," how the past is often recollected selectively to suit one's present imperatives. I have created a quasi-folksong (played with the right hand thumb) with a kind of plucked instrument accompaniment. The melody recycles round and round, always in fragmentary form, each time with different sections "erased." Flourishes and ppp s...
