In this program you will hear excerpts from two of those shows. The first features Cahn on guitar and vocals accompanied by Carl Granich on guitar in the performance of a number of Folk and Blues standards, including an absolutely beautiful rendition of “Nobody Knows You When You Are Down & Out,” with Granich providing some delightful guitar picking. Other highlights include “Alberta Let Your Hair Hang Low” and “Columbus Stockade” the latter of which had particular significance to Cahn as he is probably one of the few people to perform the song after actually having spent some time in that prison after getting into a bit of a pickle during his basic training in the 1940s. Folk Music with Rolf Cahn: Jo Mapes in Concert at San Francisco State College, Spring 1955 Listen Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 44 min Event Type: Music Program Origin: KPFA From a December 17, 1962 broadcast, Rolf Cahn presents a selection of Folk and Blues music by Jo Mapes, Reverend Gary Davis, and Mike Russo. The majority of the program is devoted to music by Jo Mapes, recorded at the San Francisco State College in the Spring of 1955, and eventually released on a LP from Bay Concerts. Jo Mapes was a classmate of Odetta, and an inspiration for Joan Baez, and yet despite her superior guitar playing, intuitive phrasing, and sweet voice, she never had quite the same amount of success as her better known contemporaries. A regular on the folk scene in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York in the 1950s, Mapes was also a frequent guest on the Hootenanny television show, and continues to play and sing today.
