His concrete poetry and cut-up writings, often heralded a future of artificial intelligence, space migration, and expanding consciousness as is shown in these three works form the early 1970s. "2021" is a reply to Philip Geitzen's question concerning whether science fiction will be science fact in 2021. It was the soundtrack for a Geitzen video piece premiered at the Philo T. Farnsworth Memorial Event held at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco in June of 1971. Amirkhanian plays a number of Cage’s compositions, including “Credo in Us” and “Roanji” as well as Cage reading from his Diary. Amirkhanian gives background on Cage, including the influence of Henry Cowell, Arnold Schoenberg and Buddhism on his music, leading into a summary of Cage's style. Cage discusses how he met filmmaker Oskar Fischinger through Galka Shire around 1935, which led him to composing music for percussion instruments. A reading by Jan Herman Listen Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 24 min Event Type: Spoken Word Program Origin: KPFA In a program that was recorded on Feb. 13, 1970, Jan Herman reads from the 5th issue of his magazine “San Francisco Earthquake.” The title of this particular issue was “VDRSVP.” The reading includes works by Sinclair Beiles, Carl Solomon, Carl Weissner, Annie Rooney, and Jan Herman, chosen at random, and read here as if they were all part of the same piece. Jan Herman was at the time a publisher of avant-garde literature, who in addition to his magazine, also brought to print various pamphlets by Dick Higgins, Liam O'Gallagher, and William S. Burroughs under the Nova Broadcasting imprint. This particular reading serves as a classic example of the sort of cut-up literary style that was championed by such writers as William S. These poems were originally available to the general public via a special telephone number from the The Architectural League of New York. However due to some of the adult content contained in certain pieces the project was threatened with lawsuit’s from concerned, conservative parents and the telephone number was eventually disconnected. John Giorno then turned to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City as a venue for his collaborative project.
