1. radiOM.org - Jazz Archives Ragtime Piano, Part II [6.642% Popularity: 0.00000]
Jazz Archives: Ragtime Piano, Part II Listen Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 28 min Event Type: Music Program Origin: KPFA Phil Elwood presents a program on the evolution of Ragtime music from Scott Joplin to Jelly Roll Morton. The early composers of Ragtime saw themselves foremost as composers and looked down on the unschooled musicians that later adapted Ragtime into what became known as Jazz. Joplin in particular was rather conservative in his approach to Ragtime, and did little to include the swinging beat that was to be popularized by later musicians such as Jelly Roll Morton. Most of this music predates modern recording techniques and was typically cut onto rolls that could be performed by a player piano. Elwood plays a selection of tunes that span the time from the turn of the 20th century up to the 1920s when Jazz first began to come into its own. Musical Selections: Something Doing (1903) / Scott Joplin -- Euphonic Sounds (1909) / Scott Joplin -- Grace and Beauty (1909) / James Scott -- Sunburst...

5. radiOM.org - Ode To Gravity Music by Ballif, Bolcom, & Ligeti [5.874% Popularity: 0.00000]
Ode To Gravity: Music by Ballif, Bolcom, & Ligeti Listen Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 60 min Event Type: Interview and Music Program Origin: KPFA Additional Media Files (click to view) Charles Amirkhanian presents the music of the eccentric French composer, Claude Ballif. as well as a selection of piano rags performed by William Bolcom, and György Ligeti’s composition for harpsichord “Continuum.” Ballif wrote music of enormous strength and clarity. Like his compatriot Olivier Messiaen, his music is the result of his deep involvement in Catholicism. Little known in the United States at the time of this recording, Ballif had produced a highly original and very unified series of works dating back to the mid-1950s. He was a professor of music at the Reims Conservatory and the product of the exciting and turbulent post World War II years of the Western avant-garde which saw the rise of such musical metaphysicians as Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen. But Ballif’s vision was a wide one, and he has sho...
