The motions and gestures of the piece were suggested by the striking change in the appearance of a beach's sand when the wind disturbs its tranquility and re-forms the sand into a pattern of ripples. Canto” exists on many levels-along the lines of a multi-dimensional checkerboard. The simplicity of a song is mirrored by a solo instrument as the center of a musical universe, along with a multiplicity of harmonic and rhythmic cells orbiting around its core. The texts all are by Cuban writers, and the music was premiered by baritone Thomas Buckner, who commissioned it. In this program Richard Friedman speaks with him by telephone about his career, and introduces recordings of Nancarrow’s player piano music as well as works for live performers. Friedman also talks to Gordon Mumma who describes the early career of Nancarrow during which his music was largely unappreciated until Henry Cowell, John Cage, and Merce Cunningham took an interest in popularizing the composer’s studies for player piano. This work, translated as Twin Structures, was premiered in Brazil by Paoulo Affonso de Moura Ferreira and Maria Angelica Ketterer. This work has already been performed in Argentina, Paraguay, the United States, and Spain, and is often performed by Brazilian piano duos. Born in Menlo Park in 1897, Cowell began his musical career as a concert pianist, and is perhaps best known for pioneering such “ultramodern” performance techniques as “tone clusters,” in which the arms are used to play a number of notes simultaneously, and the direct manipulation of the strings of the piano, in a manner that presaged John Cage’s works for prepared piano. Yet Cowell’s greatest contribution to avant-garde music came with his publication of the journal “New Music Quarterly” and its associated recordings.
