New Sounds San Jose: The Fourth Annual Festival: Concert One Listen Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 82 min Event Type: Music A recording of works by Robert Erickson given at the 4th Annual New Sounds San Jose Concert in 1982. Born in 1917, Erickson studied with Ernst Krenek, and was one of the first American composers to work with tape music. He served as a mentor for such composers as Morton Subotnick, Pauline Oliveros, and Terry Riley while holding a variety of teaching positions at U. C. Berkeley, U. C. San Diego, the San Francisco Conservatory, and other institutions. Erickson died in 1997 after a long illness. In this program the works heard include “Night Music”, for trumpet and instrumental ensemble, a cantata based on a text by Wallace Stevens, “Summer Music” for violin and tape, and others. This program was recorded on May 7, 1982. San Francisco Chamber Music Society: A Concert from March 10, 1980 Listen Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 95 min Event Type: Music Program Origin: KPFA The fifth concert of the 1979-80 season of the San Francisco Chamber Music Society, featured a fascinating mixture of very old and quite new music. The program began with a short talk about, and demonstration of, the piri, an oboe like instrument used in Korean music, given by the noted musicologist, Jonathan Condit. This is all by means of introduction to Isang Yun’s 1971 composition “Piri” which is scored for oboe and performed here by William Bennett. Soprano Judith Nelson then performs Luigi Rossi’s solo cantata “Sopra Conca D’Argento” and Nicholas Lanier’s “Lament of Hero on the Death of Leander” while being accompanied by Laurette Goldberg on harpsichord and Susie Napper on the viola da Gamba.
