Highlights of the recital includes works by Erik Satie, Pierre Boulez, Olivier Messiaen, Ludwig van Beethoven, and others. David Hemmingway graduated from Haverford College in Pennsylvania and did postgraduate work at U. C. Berkeley. He studied with Madame Messina of the Curtis Institute and Alexander Uninsky of the University of Toronto. Hemmingway also studied composition with Henry Cowell of Columbia University. Lees discusses his childhood in San Francisco, and the fact that as of this recording, none of his works had been performed in the Bay Area. Included in the program are the first movement of his “Piano Sonata No. 4” performed by Gary Graffman, and his “Symphony No. 3” performed by Sixten Ehrling and the Detroit Symphony. Mr. Lees, one of American maverick composer George Antheil’s star students, died in May of 2010 at the age of 86.
