Treasury of the 78's: Music for Horn Listen Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 62 mins Event Type: Music Program Origin: KPFA From a program first broadcast on June 12, 1962, John Whiting presents some early 78 rpm recordings of music for horn, performed by Audbry Brain and his son Dennis Brain. The first selection heard is Johannes Brahms “Trio in E-Flat Major,” for piano, horn and violin. Morning Concert: The Music of Willem Pijper Listen Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 128 min Event Type: Music Program Origin: KPFA Han Reiziger of the Dutch radio station, VPRO, guest host’s on KPFA’s Morning Concert, for a program dedicated to the music of one of the Netherland’s internationally best known 20th century composers, Willem Pijper. Although he briefly studied composition with Johan Wagenaar, Pijper was largely self-taught as a composer. Despite suffering from poor heath for much of his life, he managed to create a large body of work that is still widely performed today. In addition to his composing Pijper also worked as a music critic for the “Utrechtsch Dagblad” and helped establish a periodical called “De Muziek”, for which he also wrote a series of essays. This program, which focuses on Pijper’s chamber works, (although one his symphonies is also heard), is an excellent introduction to this Dutch composer. All the more so because of Reiziger’s soft spoken, but highly informative, commenta...

Guest Artistic Director Carl Stone begins the proceedings with some introductory remarks. The concert then begins with: String Quartet No. 3,"There must be some way out of here" The subtitle "There must be some way out of here" is a quotation from "All Along the Watchtower" by Bob Dylan. A song that particularly embodies the philosophy of life as expressed by the rock generation from which ter Veldhuis emerges. There must be some way out of here said the joker to the thief. There's too much confusion I can't get no relief... The text can be seen as optimistic or despairing, but also as encapsulating an idea to be explored. That is the spirit in which the Third Quartet was conceived. The music is all about sound, about the forces of attraction and ...
