An Interview with Louis Andriessen, July 30, 1979 Listen Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 114 min Event Type: Interview Program Origin: KPFA Charles Amirkhanian and Robert Hughes interview the Dutch composer Louis Andriessen in July of 1979. Andriessen is a third generation Dutch composer, whose work has been strongly influenced by his socialist politics. In this interview he discusses his work with two Dutch ensembles with leftist leanings and how, in such a situation, even a conductor is considered too authoritarian. The three also talk about the role the Dutch Government plays in financing the arts and how that differs from the situation in the United States. In addition, Andriessen describes three of his works, “Hoketus”, “Symphony for Open Strings”, and “Mausoleum”; what it was like to grow up in a family of famous composers; and how his politics influence which commissions he accepts and what type of ensembles he writes for. Musical Selections: Hoketus, for pan pipes, pianos, electric pianos, bass g...

Comparatively Speaking: Bach’s Cantatas Listen Item Type: Sound Recording Duration: 67 min Event Type: Interview and Music Program Origin: KPFA Matthew Holdreith presents another program in his Comparatively Speaking series in which he juxtaposes varying performances of popular classical music. In this recording he examines Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantatas and oratorios, paying particular attention to the differences between performances that use instruments and vocal practices that were the norm in Bach’s day with more modern variations. Much of this fascinating program is spent comparing the different effects that can be achieved through the use of child singers as opposed to adult female sopranos. Holdreith was apparently inspired by Nikolaus Harnoncourt efforts to record all of Bach’s cantatas on original Baroque instruments, excerpts of which are included here. Whether you are already a huge fan of Bach’s vocal music, or someone who is only hearing it for the first time, you should find Holdreith’s illum...

It was later revised in 1969 so this recording of the original version is of particular interest.
