Amirkhanian then plays a number of the Maestro’s lighter works, including his “Trio in G Major” for three flutes, and the “Five Variations on ‘Rule Britannia.” Charles is then joined by White who reads from a number of biographical sketches written by Beethoven’s contemporaries as well as some entries from the composer’s diary. The evening’s featured works included a subtle string quartet by the Swiss composer Jürg Frey and performed by the Quatuor Bozzini; a lively double trio for woodwinds and string as well as an elegant piano piece composed by Chou Wen-Chun; and a song cycle for voice and violin by Lisa Bielawa, based on texts by Franz Kafka, and performed by the multi-talented Carla Kihlstedt. Joining moderator Charles Amirkhanian on stage was, Clemens Merkel, first violinist of the Quatuor Bozzini, Swiss composer Jürg Frey, and vocalist and composer Lisa Bielawa. Frey describes the inspiration and structure of the minimal, microtonal composition which was to be heard later in the evening, while Clemens provides a demonstration of the technique required to perform it, as well as commenting on the physical challenge of playing very slowly over a long duration of time.
